For bar code printers using thermal transfer printing, a special color tape is needed to transfer information such as bar codes and characters to labels. This special ribbon (commonly known as carbon ribbon) is generally composed of three parts: base film, heat-resistant coating and ink coating. It is the carrier of base film ribbon, and polyester film with a thickness of 4.5μm is generally selected. Its strength and thickness directly affect the elongation and application fields of carbon ribbon. The main function of heat-resistant coating is to insulate heat, reduce friction, reduce dust attached to the print head, protect the print head and prolong the service life of the print head. Ink coating is composed of pigment, resin, wax, additives and other components. It affects the transfer temperature, printing quality, color of the ribbon, friction resistance of prints and other main properties of the ribbon, and is the core of the ribbon. Carbon powder is the ink component of the commonly used black ribbon, which is why the ribbon is often called carbon ribbon.
The working principle of thermal transfer ribbon is that the carbon ribbon is in thermal transfer printer, the heat-resistant coating is in direct contact with the thermal transfer head, and the thermal transfer ink is in direct contact with the substrate (label). When working, the thermal transfer head instantly releases heat, and the heat of the heat release point is transmitted to the thermal transfer ink coating through the heat-resistant coating and base film, and the ink is melted and hot printed on the substrate to form characters and images. High-quality ribbon has no heat transfer ink residue in the heated part after transfer.
